CHALLENGE
- Every dollar of revenue comes through affiliates, with no storefront or paid marketing to fall back on.
- Growth has depended on stylists recruiting other stylists, but selling and recruiting turned out to be different skills.
- With affiliate growth slow, scaling the stylist base is the real bottleneck.
SOLUTION
- Built a tiered stylist program: 25% base commission, a 5% team-leader override, 3% on a second level, and a 35% top tier.
- Equips new stylists with samples they can resell and deduct, plus capsule-wardrobing training to share with customers.
- Runs the whole program on UpPromote after leaving GrowthHero, giving stylists instant commission visibility.
RESULTS
- 100% of revenue flows through the affiliate (stylist) program.
- Around 160 active stylists drive more than 1,000 sales.
- A cleaner back office where stylists see their commission the moment a sale lands.
LESSONS
- A business can run entirely on affiliates, but that concentrates every bit of growth in one channel.
- Don’t assume strong sellers will recruit; the two skills are different.
- Give affiliates a repeatable method to sell, not just a commission rate.
Storyline Collection is a woman-owned designer clothing line built around a single idea: women should be able to share the clothes they love and earn an income while doing so.
Founded in 2019 and based in Minneapolis, the brand designs inclusive women’s separates for capsule wardrobing, with every piece made in the USA.
Most fashion brands treat affiliates as one channel among many. Storyline Collection took a different route and built the whole business on them, so every sale flows through the women the company calls stylists.
Why does Storyline Collection run entirely on stylists?
For roughly seven years, the stylist program has been Storyline’s only route to market, with no separate storefront push or paid acquisition running alongside it.
What makes us unique is that we operate on an affiliate platform, so women can share our product, sell our product, and earn income from doing that.
Amy Lamphere, Founder & CEO of Storyline CollectionEach stylist gets a branded URL to sell from and earns 25% commission on their sales. Those who lead a team add another 5% on their team’s sales, plus 3% on a second level, and the highest performers reach a 35% top tier.
The model turns customers into a distributed salesforce, but it carries a built-in dependency. To grow sales, the brand has to grow stylists, and that has become the hard part.
How does Storyline Collection equip and reward its stylists?
Storyline gives stylists more than a commission rate. The company also hands them a method to sell.
Product they can resell and deduct
New stylists receive samples when they sign on, and can buy additional pieces to build their own capsules.
They can buy additional samples, which they earn commission on and also can take as a tax deduction.
Amy Lamphere, Founder & CEO of Storyline CollectionCapsule wardrobing as a selling method
The brand also leans on capsule wardrobing itself as a selling tool, sharing that styling method and training with stylists, who pass it on to their customers through online parties and events.
As those formats shift, Storyline is encouraging more in-person selling, like pop-ups and boutique events.
The through-line is enablement: give stylists product, a method, and a reason for customers to keep coming back.
Why did Storyline Collection move to UpPromote?
Storyline didn’t start on UpPromote. The brand had been running on GrowthHero, another Shopify affiliate app, and found the day-to-day experience clunky.
The switch changed how the back office felt. Commission tracking, payouts, and the stylist dashboard now live in one place.
The stylists love seeing their commission instantly.
Amy Lamphere, Founder & CEO of Storyline CollectionThat immediacy matters in a program where the salesforce is also the customer base. When a stylist makes a sale and watches the commission land right away, the model proves itself in real time.
Amy did surface one request from her stylists: they’d like the first commission email to show the customer’s name and order, so they can follow up personally. It’s a small ask that speaks to how invested her stylists are.
What results has Storyline Collection achieved with its stylist program?
The clearest measure of the model is also the simplest.
The affiliate revenue is 100% of our sales. We don’t have an additional storefront or online marketing.
Amy Lamphere, Founder & CEO of Storyline CollectionAround 160 active stylists power that revenue today. Together they drive more than 1,000 sales, managed by a lean team of roughly seven.
Storyline launched in 2019 and sells entirely through the women who love the collection. For a business built that way, running fully on affiliates is the proof point, and the next chapter is scale.
What’s next for Storyline Collection?
Storyline is honest about the road ahead. The growth has depended on stylists recruiting other stylists, and that hasn’t kept pace with the ambition.
Our stylists aren’t recruiters. So we are looking at creating some sort of new campaign to bring in additional affiliates.
Amy Lamphere, Founder & CEO of Storyline CollectionThat campaign is the current focus, and the brand is also eyeing newer partner-discovery tools to reach stylists beyond the current network. The goal is to widen the top of the funnel without losing the community feel that makes the model work.
